St Leonards School
Situated in the heart of St Andrews, St Leonards is a thriving co-ed school that offers outstanding day and boarding education from 5 – 18 years. It provides a world of opportunity, combining exceptional academic and co-curricular achievement with a friendly atmosphere, developing students into mature and confident individuals.
Home to the game of golf and Scotland's oldest university, St Andrews is an unrivalled location to start your child's education. Idyllic beaches, heritage landmarks and spectacular countryside are within walking distance of the school. St Leonards is also privileged to have well-established links with the university, enabling students with further opportunities in drama, music, art and sport – including golf of course! The school's friendly and welcoming campus is one of the town's hidden gems: beautiful medieval walls surround the colourful school grounds, as well as multiple playing fields, a 25m swimming pool and a mix of modern facilities and historic buildings.
One of our boarding houses has undergone a £3m redevelopment and re-opened in September 2016. The newly refurbished house provides outstanding boarding facilities for our students, offering state-of-the-art single and twin study bedroom accommodation, as well as public areas. Aspects of the interior patterns have been created using a sketch by a current student (and art scholar) – a Bishopshall Toile has been created of signature St Leonards scenes, and appears on all the curtains as well as cushions in the boarding house.
The Junior School has welcomed a new Junior School Head, William Goldsmith. Delighted with his new appointment, William commented on his vision for the school:
"I cannot wait to lead the school through the next stage of its development. Offering children a breadth of opportunities within a nurturing and happy environment where every individual is valued, lies right at the heart of my belief for education".
St Leonards class sizes allow pupils to be treated as individuals and benefit from additional support from enthusiastic and highly-committed staff. A carefully planned primary years education programme provides them with a thorough grounding in core areas and specialist input in distinct subjects as they progress through the school. In the Junior School alone, there are over 35 different co-curricular activities on offer, enabling pupils to not only progress with their existing passions, but also to discover and develop new ones.
St Leonards also encompasses an outstanding learning environment and is only school in Scotland to focus 100% on the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in the Sixth Form. The school's broad and thorough curriculum provides the perfect foundation for learning and an easy transition from the Junior School upwards – preparing students well for entering the Sixth Form to complete this internationally recognised qualification. It was recently ranked the Top independent Secondary school Sixth Form in Scotland (based on IB & A level results).
Students reap the rewards of their dedication to the IB, consistently achieving impressive exam results and finding the door to university opened for them, graduating from St Leonards and securing places at top institutions across the UK and beyond, including Cambridge, Durham, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, LSE, Oxford, and St Andrews to study a selection of subjects.
The school motto is Ad Vitam which means 'for life'. These words resonate in every aspect of the 'St Leonards student experience' – a place where learning and friendships are made for life.
